Our ambition: being the best charterer in the Netherlands.
Beaufort Logistics was established in 2017 by Stefan Visscher and Tjerk Hovestadt to be the best Dutch chartering company in the field of dry cargo for international European inland navigation.
After almost 15 years of experience as charterers, it was about time to live up to their ambitions.
Born a skipper’s son, growing up on the water
Being born skippers’ sons, owners Stefan Visscher and Tjerk Hovestadt have learned their basics in the workplace. Because of that, they fully understand how much work there is to do on board. This practical experience is what separates Beaufort Logistics from many other chartering companies. It makes Beaufort Logistics a chartering company where both shipper and skipper find a good partnership.
Complementing each other and always thinking one step ahead
At Beaufort Logistics we are able to think a step ahead because of our years of experience in the business – we have been working together for years. We know each other’s qualities and complement each other very well. We don’t only know how much time it takes to ship a cargo from A to B, but we also know how loading and unloading points are organised at the destination, in which order and combination a ship can be loaded or not, or which impact the current rainfall has on water levels.
Favourable planning for both customer and skipper
Our most important goal is to get every cargo shipment to the skipper in the most practical manner straight away. This way, empty sails are minimalised, but it also offers the best solution to the customer, who wants his cargo being transported quickly and secure. We are able to respond more quickly to last-minute requests.
STEFAN VISSCHER
& BEAUFORT LOGISTICS
To Stefan, the challenge is to make the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
With this challenge, it is not only about shipping a cargo from A to B. 'You try to limit empty sails and delays for the skipper. If a ship is being unloaded today, you would like to see it loaded again that same evening. All day long you try to complete the puzzle, hoping you can make it all fit optimally. When all the puzzle pieces fall into place, you have a good day'.
At Beaufort Logistics, Stefan mostly deals with the transhipment from the inland ports to the hinterland.
Stefan Visscher comes from a family of skippers.
His father sails, his grandfather owned a tug boat, and his grandfather’s grandfather owned a barge. 'I was born ashore, but within a week they took me with them on the ship'. Therefor his bond with inland navigation came by nature. Yet he did not want to sail himself. 'When I was fourteen, I knew I wanted to become a charterer. Two years later, I had the newspaper write that I hoped to become the largest and best charterer in the Netherlands'. This ambition still stands. 'Especially helping think how things could run optimally is fun: the arranging and negotiations. You try to get the best out of it for the customer as well as for the skipper. The goal is to have them both hang up the phone with a satisfied feeling, thinking: "We did good!" Only when that happens, I hang up the phone with the feeling it worked out well'.
The fact that he grew up with inland shipping, is a great advantage to him.
'I know how much work something takes on board. The day doesn’t end'. He also knows the technique from experience. 'I built a ship together with my parents. Because I have held every piece of the ship in my hands, I know what a skipper is talking about when he tells me something is broken'. That knowledge is valuable.
TJERK HOVESTADT
& BEAUFORT LOGISTICS
For Tjerk, the challenge is to satisfy both customer and skipper.
'A customer is happy when he can transport his cargo with confidence. The skipper is satisfied when he has few delays or a good daily average'.
At Beaufort Logistics, Tjerk mainly deals with the transhipment from the hinterland to the inland ports.
'I might be the seventh or eighth generation of skippers in my family'.
Tjerk Hovestadt is a real skipper’s boy. And after school he ended up on board himself. 'I came on board of a dated ship with my modern views. That was hard work. You spend a lot of time being on the water, but you only have a few possessions with you, and you just have to deal with that. I grew up on board: when I close my eyes, I still feel like I’m sailing'.
The years of experience on board are an advantage to him as a charterer.
He doesn’t regret working as a charterer for fourteen years now. 'When I talk to a skipper about a certain destination, I know how that location is arranged logistically. You can feel it. When someone has a problem, for example, if an unloading point doesn’t function, then I immediately think: "O, wait, I know that one". This makes the lines shorter'.
JAN-RENS FAASSE
& BEAUFORT LOGISTICS
Jan-Rens recently joined Beaufort Logistics.
The personal ambiance appeals to him. ‘The Dutch chartering world is small. I knew Stefan and Tjerk already. When I heared they were hiring, I responded immediately. Beaufort Logistics is a small company. I like the personal atmosphere, both at our office as well as in our contact with the outside world. We recently used "Together we're Beaufort" as a slogan, but that's really how I experience working here. I enjoy my work a lot.'
Being a skipper's son, he knows his way around.
Until the age of six Jan-Rens lived aboard. He then went on to boarding school. 'My father is a skipper, my uncle is a skipper, my grandfather was a skipper, other relatives are involved in shipbuilding and repair... Shipping goes back in my family for four generations at least. As a child I loved sailing and I always wanted to know everything about the whole loading and unloading process.'
'I got into chartering by chance.'
He never aspired to sail himself. 'Thanks to my background as a skipper's son, I was given the opportunity to start working as a charterer. At the time, there was no formal training program, so I learned the trade on the job. It was quite a challenge, but it's the best way to learn. There is no handbook for chartering: you learn by doing.'
Danube experience
At the moment, Jan-Rens mainly deals with transport from the seaports to the hinterland. His field of expertise, however, concerns the Danube region. 'Through previous work I have a lot of experience with chartering on the Danube. It has gained my personal interest. In time, I would like to focus more on that region.'
